Wellness Pathway #115:
Take Aspirin Daily
|
I mentioned in this week's Provision (Click)
that I have a congenital heart problem. I'll mention here that I have a bicuspid
aortic valve, which tends to wear out and require replacement more quickly and
more often than the typical tricuspid design. About 1 in 75 people are born with
my condition. Long distance running is good for my heart, because it helps to
keep down my blood pressure and resting pulse rate. Explosive sports and weight
lifting are bad, because they cause sudden spikes in blood pressure that put
stress on the valve. My condition requires an annual echocardiogram, to be sure
it isn't deteriorating. I have good reason to stay in shape.
When I last saw my cardiologist, I gave him a list of all the heart-healthy
supplements I take. He refused to comment on whether they were good or bad. He
simply didn't know. But he would say that every single cardiologist he knows
takes an aspirin a day for their cardiovascular health. Now there's new
evidence, from the US Preventive Services Task Force, that the benefits of
aspirin outweigh the harms if you are at risk of cardiovascular problems. Visit
http://www.med-decisions.com to calculate your risk. If it's more than 3% in
the next five years, a daily low-dose aspirin regimen is probably recommended.
Check with your doctor.
