Have you ever considered going on a liquid diet for a
predetermined period of time? The benefits are many. It clearly assists you to become more mindful
of what you are, and are not, putting into your mouth. There was a time in my life when I would go
on a liquid diet, primarily fruit and vegetable juices along with tea, for two weeks every year: the
week before Thanksgiving and the week before Easter.
Going liquid was a discipline that made the week before those holidays more interesting and insightful. After about three
days, the body adjusts to its new regimen and you enter a time of heightened sensitivity to both
inner and outer stimulation. Giving up solid food -- which often reduces one's calorie and sodium
intakes -- has definite mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual effects. Done properly, I think
they are positive.
Some write, for example, of it detoxifying the body while others assert enhanced nutritional
absorption. These claims are still being studied. One thing, however, is clear. Going liquid is
different from fasting and fasting is not a good way to lose weight. True fasting eliminates
virtually all calories, plunging the body into starvation mode from which it roars back with a
vengeance once the fast is broken. This can make it even harder to maintain or lose weight in the
future.
Going liquid is simply a different way of consuming your daily energy requirements.
This coming week I will be on a liquid diet along with a group of friends who want to use the week as a time
to get more focused on our eating habits. We know full well that fasting is not a good way to
lose weight. But we also know
that a liquid diet will interrupt our routine and make us more aware of
who we are and what we want in relationship to food. And that's a good thing to do from time to
time.
For the week, we have no set limit on calorie consumption. As a result, we could gain weight if we were to drink enough milk shakes! But
that is not our thought. I plan to
start the day with a robust fruit smoothie, including protein powder and ground flax seeds, and then
to go through the day largely on juices and tea. I also plan, as always, to drink plenty of filtered water.
Unless you have a medical condition that would argue against this regimen (talk with your doctor), you
too might want to consider going on a liquid diet for a predetermined period of time in order to
experience some health benefits and to learn some valuable life lessons.

Here are two recipes for healthy shakes,
replete with all the healthy fat, protein, carbohydrates, and fiber you'll need for the day. Both recipes
are enough for two people. I drink the Chewy Fruit Smoothie in the morning and the Spicy Vegetable
Shake in the evening. The rest of the day, I stay with juice, filtered water, and
rooibos tea.
