Last week I wrote about the Paleolithic Diet
Click, growing out of research into
evolutionary nutrition. The premise of this diet argues that our bodies,
virtually unchanged from the Stone Age, are best suited to digest and thrive on
the diets of our Paleolithic ancestors. The products of the relatively recent agricultural
revolution are viewed as causing both the obesity
and chronic diseases we suffer from in the Space Age.
This week I call your attention to the Anti-Inflammation Diet, growing out of
research into medical nutrition. Using the latest scientific information
regarding obesity and chronic diseases, such as heart disease and cancer, Dr.
Richard Fleming has written an excellent book, Stop Inflammation Now!,
Click to Purchase, with easy-to-follow recommendations.
Although coming at the problem from two different directions, the similarities
between these two diets were striking. Both saw problems with dairy products,
cereal grains, refined sugar, processed oils, added salt, and fatty meat. In
their ideal world, both would eliminate the consumption of these foods
altogether. They are not required for human nutrition, and may be causing many
of the problems that modern medicine is devoted to curing.
Where these two diets diverge is in the nature and quantity of the lean protein
they recommend. Whereas the Paleolithic Diet recommends 19-35% protein, from
lean meats, the Anti-Inflammation diet recommends 10-15% protein, from both
vegetable and animal sources. The Anti-Inflammation Diet favors beans, legumes,
tofu, and other soy products over lean meats (but does not eliminate lean
meats).
Why Anti-Inflammation? Because science has now documented the importance of
internal and invisible inflammation as the root cause of many chronic diseases.
Cholesterol is not all there is to heart disease. And excess calories is not all
there is to obesity. The body treats excess calories as alien invaders,
provoking an inflammation response in order to store them as fat.
The solution? Eating more of the right foods and less of the bad foods, plus a
robust daily exercise routine, will not only produce our optimum weight -- they
will also protect us against many of the scourges of Western civilization.
Coaching Inquiries: Are you at your optimum weight? Have you tried to lose
weight, only to fail? How much of your diet is made up of dairy products, cereal
grains, refined sugar, processed oils, added salt, and fatty meat? Is it time to
make a change for good? How could you get going in the right direction?
